Devil's Garden Corn Snake Elaphe guttata guttata

The Devil’s Garden is an area of southwest Florida known among local field herpers for its beautiful normal corn snakes and occasional anerythristic specimens. My breeders are descended from outstanding stock that I collected myself. Though phenotypically "normal,"  my examples are abnormal in their beauty, with deep red blotches boldly outlined in black on a bright orange background.  My babies from this bloodline are possible hets for Type A anerythrism.

In the Wild

The Devil's Garden is a sparsely populated area mostly in Hendry County, FL. This is a region of mixed habitats including flatwoods, cypress domes, and agriculture. Though it has been impacted by man, it is still a pretty wild area with  sightings of the elusive Florida panther regularly reported. The standard methods of south Florida snake hunting apply here, with road cruising, flipping artificial cover, and shining trees at night all being effective in different situations. Corn snakes are one of the most common large snake species. They share their habitat with eastern indigo snakes, yellow rat snakes, and Florida king snakes in many areas. I have fairly extensive field experience there and have saved the nicest wild caught corns for my breeding project. It took many trips to put together the colony that I have now.

Cabbage palms and south Florida slash pines dot a cattle pasture in a typical scene from the Devil's Garden.          Just after sunset on a warm, clear summer evening, we stop to view a chunky corn snake adorning the road .
