Eastern kingsnakes from coastal areas of the Carolinas tend to have the classic white chain pattern on an almost jet black background. I have seen specimens crossing roads in the salt marshes of North Carolina and the striking white chain pattern high on the sides was visible from a good distance away. This experience has inspired my selection of certain specimens from that area which exemplify these traits.
