South
Florida Mole Kingsnake L. c. occipitolineata This is
one of the rarest snakes in North America. It is only found in
the dry prairie region to the north and west of Lake Okeechobee.
Much of the prairie habitat in this region has been destroyed or
degraded by development and agriculture. Our specimens come from
Okeechobee and Desoto Counties. Most of the south Florida mole
kings in captivity were descended from only a few specimens
caught in the late 80's and early 90's. This bloodline seems to
have suffered from the effects of inbreeding, with many
offspring showing birth defects. Fortunately, we have been able
to add fresh wild caught specimens to our colony to counter this
problem. The babies tend to hatch small and some may insist on
small lizards as food at first. Pinky eaters will be sold at a
higher price than lizard eaters. Young Mole Kings are light gray
to peach with red or maroon blotches. On some specimens, the
blotches may be split for a "twin-spotted" look. This pattern
may be retained or fade with age. If you would like the chance
to work with a beautiful animal that is rarely seen or bred, this
is the snake for you.
