This is my favorite snake. The nicest glades rats are nearly bright solid orange snakes with very little pattern, though many specimens do have light thin stripes. Most specimens have glowing red eyes and a red tongue. My breeders are prime examples of this subspecies. Even the hatchlings have a pink tinge, a hint of the beautiful orange coloration to come. In the herpetological community, there is controversy about whether rossalleni is or ever was a valid subspecies. Because this form was so highly adapted to the wet Everglades habitats, many have said that the environmental destruction of the region allowed quadrivittata to invade the area and produce an intergrade population. Today, the rat snakes that occur within the described range of rossalleni are only occasionally orange in coloration, though most have thinner, lighter stripes than the typical yellow rat. I have spent considerable time field helping in the historic range of rossalleni and have found a few nice specimens, but they are few and far between. In addition to normal specimens, I will also be producing single and double hets for various traits such as whiteside, blotchless and hypo.
