This beautiful natural form occurs in the panhandle of Florida, though most wild gray rats from that area conform to the white oak characteristics. This phase is defined by a high contrast pattern: gray blotches on a silvery, almost white background. Unlike other obsoleta subspecies, spiloides retains the juvenile pattern and color throughout life. Some of my white oaks come from Dwight Good’s outstanding bloodline. I have added several nice examples from my field herping trips to the panhandle. An interesting zigzag pattern variant has recently popped up in my white oaks. I hope to be able to selectively breed for this trait in the future.
