The
redfoot tortoise is one of the most beautiful and popular
tortoises in the world. The bright red speckling on the legs
and yellow patterning on the head and carapace on a nearly
black background are some of its most distinctive features. It
is a medium sized tortoise that occasioanlly exceeds fourteen
inches in length. It it elongated in comparison to most
tortoises and older males can even develop into a peanut like
shape. This tortoise is native to the forests and savannahs of
northern South America and southern Panama. In captivity, it
does very well the warm, humid climates of the southeastern
US, if protected from extreme temperatures. Outdoor enclosures
should have sun and shade areas and a shallow pool of water
for soaking. A more humid microclimate can be simulated in
drier areas by running sprinklers. If raised indoors,
juveniles can be kept on a substrate of cypress mulch and
misted frequently. Like its relative the yellowfoot tortoise,
the redfoot requires more fruit and protein in the form of
meat than many other tortoises. It should be offered these
foods in addition to leafy greens and grasses.
